Muslims are converting to Christianity in their thousands in France but face exclusion from their families and even death threats.

Most Muslims hide their conversion and Protestant ministers do their utmost to protect new converts. It is estimated that every year in the world some six million Muslims convert to Christianity.

Around 15,000 Muslims each year are converting to Christianity - around 10,000 to Catholicism and 5,000 to Protestantism.

Tiny computer chips used for tracking food, tickets and other items are getting even smaller. Hitachi Ltd., a Japanese electronics maker, recently showed off radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips that are just 0.002 inches by 0.002 inches and look like bits of powder. They’re thin enough to be embedded in a piece of paper, company spokesman Masayuki Takeuchi said.

RFID tags store data, but they need to be brought near special reading devices that beam energy to the chips, which then send information back to the readers.

Increasing tensions between Washington and Tehran have revived New York Police Department concerns that Iranian agents may already have targeted the city for terror attacks. Such attacks could be aimed at bridges and tunnels, Jewish organizations and Wall Street, NYPD briefers told security execs last fall, according to a person with access to the briefing materials who asked for anonymity because of the sensitive subject matter.

NYPD officials have worried about possible Iranian-sponsored attacks since a series of incidents involving officials of the Iranian Mission to the United Nations. In November 2003, Ahmad Safari and Alireaza Safi, described as Iranian Mission “security” personnel, were detained by transit cops when they were seen videotaping subway tracks from Queens to Manhattan at 1:10 in the morning. The men later left New York. “We’re concerned that Iranian agents were engaged in reconnaissance that might be used in an attack against New York City at some future date,” Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly told NEWSWEEK.

Iranian media say the country has successfully launched its first rocket capable of reaching space.

But officials later said it was for research and would not go into orbit.

Experts say if Iran has fired a rocket into space it would cause alarm abroad as it would mean scientists had crossed important technological barriers.

Iran has made little secret of its desire to become a space power and already has a satellite in orbit launched by the Russians.

The latest launch - if confirmed - comes at a time of mounting tension between Tehran and the West over Iran’s controversial nuclear programme.

Most Israelis want their nation to be part of the European Union and 11 percent said they would leave Israel if they were granted EU citizenship, according to a survey.

Half of all Israeli citizens said they visited Europe in the past three years, the study found. Britain was the most popular state among Israelis who traveled to Europe with 80 percent saying it was their favorite destination. Germany placed second with 67 percent followed by Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey and Norway. France was the least popular with 61 percent of those polled saying they disliked France.

The study was commissioned by the Israeli offices of the German political foundation Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

Spain, Italy agree to help relaunch EU constitution (A Revived Roman Empire?)
The prime ministers of Spain and Italy on Tuesday agreed to join efforts to relaunch the stalled European Union constitution to further push the bloc’s integration process forward.

At a bilateral meeting held on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Ibiza, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero called the two countries to support the holder of the current EU presidency Germany’s efforts to break a stalemate on the draft charter.

Germany, which took up the EU presidency early this year, has repeatedly said that it wants to see the charter — in some form or the other — adopted by 2009, but has given no further indication as to how that might be achieved.
